What are blackheads?

Blackheads also known as ‘open’ comedones are follicles filled with excess oil, debris and dead skin cells which oxidise, giving them a black or dark appearance. Although anyone can suffer from blackheads, they appear most commonly on an oily skin type and can be present at the early stages of mild to moderate acne. Most people will experience blackheads at some point in their lives this can be due to many different factors including excess oil production or an insufficient use of a skincare regime.

As blackheads are most commonly seen on oily skin types, you may be able to identify them if you can see the following signs:

  • Bumpy appearance with black/dark coloured spots, individual or clustered
  • Enlarged pores
  • Excess oil production
  • Build-up of dead skin cells

What causes blackheads?

Blackheads occur when open follicles are filled with excess oil, debris and dead skin cells. When the plug of oil, debris and skin cells is exposed to oxygen a process called oxidation occurs which results in the black/dark appearance. Although most commonly found on the T-zone which includes the forehead, nose and chin blackheads can appear anywhere where follicles are present on the face and body.

There are many reasons why blackheads can appear on the skin, factors that can contribute to blackheads:

  • Non comodogenic products
  • Medications
  • Hormonal influences
  • Lack of good nutrition
  • Lifestyle and stress
  • Free radicals including environmental factors, smoking and drinking

Treatments for blackheads

HydraFacial

HydraFacial delivers 6 facials in 1 with one of the steps being extractions, this involves extracting blackheads and congestion from the pores with a vacuum suction. This works by flushing the pores with serum to push the blackhead to the surface, the vacuum will then draw the congestion leaving behind clear glowing skin. HydraFacial offers quick results that can be seen after one treatment.

Glycolic peels

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that is used for chemical exfoliation. Glycolic peels are a great remedy against blackheads, as the acid penetrates very superficially into the skin working to soften and break down blockages within the pores. This superficial way of exfoliating removes the dead surface skin cells which contribute to blocked pores causing blackheads. A course of glycolic peels is recommended, we offer 3 for 2 on our Glycolic peels so great value to gain great results.

Isolaz

Isolaz is an acne therapy treatment using a vaccum suction and blue light. Isolaz can be used on all skin types and works by extracting congestion and blockages within the follicle using a vacuum suction, while also releasing a shallow blue light into the skin to kill acne causing bacteria. Isolaz works great in conjunction with salicylic or pyruvic peels to see optimal results. A course of 3 or 6 treatments is usually recommended.
