Grimes alleged that she didn’t see one of her and ex Elon Musk’s three kids—X Æ A-Xii, 4, Exa Dark Sideræl, 3, and Techno Mechanicus, 2—for five months amid their custody battle, which began in 2023.
Grimes is providing insight into a difficult period.
The “Genesis” singer alleged that she didn’t see one of her and ex Elon Musk‘s three kids—son X Æ A-Xii, 4, daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, 3, and son Techno Mechanicus, 2—for five months amid her ongoing custody battle with the Tesla CEO, who she split from in 2022 following four years of dating.
“Spent a year locked in battle in a state with terrible mothers rights having my instagram posts and modeling used as reasons I shouldn’t have my kids,” Grimes wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) Nov. 25, “and fighting and detaching from the love of my life as he becomes unrecognizable to me.”
Grimes (real name Claire Elise Boucher) alleged that she fought him for custody with “a fraction of his resources (or iq/ strategy experience), all the while I didn’t see one of my babies for 5 months.”
But the 36-year-old noted that she wanted to keep the details of the challenging time private. As she explained, “This is only what can be said publicly, since most of my experience these last years should remain behind closed doors.”
E! News reached out to Elon’s PR team at Tesla for comment but hasn’t heard back.
And while Grimes said she experienced some lows over the last year, she’s also grateful for “every bullet I caught.” In fact, it’s allowed her to tap into a new type of creativity that led to producing her next album.
“I feel on top of the world right now,” she wrote. “And everything that used to give me anxiety feels like child’s play after all this. Ego death, ego birth – it’s everything an artist could dream of.”
And her custody battle with Elon—who, along with X Æ, Techno and Exa, is father to nine other children from other relationships—isn’t the only way she’s earned new perspective as of late. Motherhood has also taught Grimes a lot.
“Having babies rips you apart and puts you back together,” she explained. “Babies are ten thousand philosophy classes of s–t you can only learn from that experience.”
Grimes and Elon, 53, have been locked in a legal dispute since October 2023, when the “Oblivion” singer filed a petition against him to establish parental rights, according to court documents obtained by NBC News. Their battle has played out in both California and Texas courts, with the cases sealed from public access, per the outlet.
And though Elon has not spoken publicly on their custody case, Grimes’ mom Sandy Garossino previously addressed him directly in an open letter, in which she accused him of withholding the passports of the musician’s three children to prevent them from traveling to see their ailing great-grandmother.
“I write with a grandmother’s plea,” Sandy wrote on X in July, “asking you to honour your agreement, return the children, and provide the documents they need to see their great grandmother before she passes.”
“Please Elon, I beg you,” she added. “This is so painful for my mother, and concerning for the kids. Time is of the essence now.”
