Emma Dumont, who appeared in 2023’s Oppenheimer, confirmed through a rep that they identify as a transmasculine non-binary person and will use a new name with friends and family.
Emma Dumont has come out as transmasculine non-binary and is now going by a new name with family and friends.
The Oppenheimer star—who now uses they/them pronouns—shared the update on their Instagram account, where they’ve changed their name to Nick Dumont while maintaining the handle @emmadumont.
“They identify as a trans masculine non-binary person,” their rep told TMZ in a statement. “Their work name is still going to be Emma Dumont, but they will go by Nick with friends and family.”
Emma hasn’t publicly addressed their coming out, but they have posted several photos since chopping off their formerly shoulder-length hair. The 30-year-old debuted a pixie cut on Instagram back in May and has since shared several other posts showing off their new look.
The actor appeared opposite Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan‘s 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer as Jackie, the titular character’s sister-in-law. They’d previously acted on Marvel’s The Gifted TV series, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Licorice Pizza and NBC’s Aquarius costarring David Duchovny.
Emma will next appear in the upcoming horror thriller New Me, for which they’re the top-billed actor. The project has wrapped filming but doesn’t have a release date yet.
The term “transmasculine” is considered an umbrella term given to anyone who was assigned female at birth whose gender expression or gender identity is masculine.
And while Emma hasn’t spoken publicly about their coming out, fellow actor Emma Corin has spoken about the treatment they have received since coming out at non-binary in 2022.
“The vitriol is worse than I anticipated,” the actor—who famously played Princess Diana on The Crown—told Harper’s Bazaar in May. “Even though we like to think we’re in a progressive society, a lot of what we’re seeing is increasingly a step back.”
“People follow me because they’ve watched something I’m in,” Emma continued. “They think I’m one kind of person, and then they’ll see who I actually am and how I present and—I will never understand why. Who are you hurting by being yourself? Why am I controversial?”
