Among the stories that had everyone talking in 2024: Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber giving us a new somebody to love, the U.S. gymnasts sticking the landing and Taylor Swift capping off her Eras era.
Do you see how 2024 is behaving? Not very demure, not very mindful.
Because the past 12 months have been packed with news that’s done more damage to the Internet than the seemingly endless memes about Australian break dancer Raygun.
Which, speaking of the 2024 Paris Olympics, it had us cheering for the likes of Clark Kent impersonator Stephen Nedoroscik and the self-named Golden Girls gymnastics squad that proved experience matters when they nabbed the team gold at their elderly-for-the-sport average age of 22.2.
Just days later, though, we found ourselves (back) flipping out over the news that Jordan Chiles had been stripped of the bronze medal she earned in the floor final. But, dare we say, she stuck the landing when she told Today‘s Hoda Kotb she was keeping what’s hers.
“I have the medal,” she said in November, calling the hardware “a cherry on top” of her Olympics redemption tour, the whole U.S. women’s squad eager to outperform their showing at the 2020 Games. “The medal is mine.”
As for the rest of the year’s wild headlines—including Blake Lively‘s revelations about filming It Ends With Us—they’re ours for the dissecting.
There was legal drama aplenty (see: Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ ever-growing list of charges and accusations and our renewed interest in Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez thanks to Ryan Murphy‘s series) and unfortunate tragedy, with the story of Liam Payne‘s life ending in Argentina Oct. 16.
But this year also brought us reason to celebrate.
Hailie Jade asked her dad Eminem to please stand up at her May nuptials, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale were all in pregnancy together and we got to celebrate the August arrival of Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber‘s baby, baby, baby, oh baby.
And with Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Gisele Bündchen, Jennifer Lawrence, Kylie Kelce and Megan Fox announcing pregnancies while Shaun White and Nina Dobrev were sinking their teeth into wedding planning, we’ll be poppin’ even more bottles come 2025.
Who’s to say if 2024 has changed us for the better, but we can confidently say we’ve been changed for good. No, of course we didn’t forget about the November release of Wicked, because at E! News, we know about popular.
Follow our lead, and yes, indeed, you will be well versed in every wild pop culture event that took place over the past 12 months.
