Chet Hanks is eternally grateful for his parents Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.
During the Tuesday, March 18 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the 34-year-old actor and musician reflected on his sobriety journey and the impact of family on helping him stay clean.
The Running Point star told host Drew Barrymore that he was “one hundred percent sober” and has been for more than three years. Barrymore, who does not drink alcohol, said that she received “massive support from my family and friends” during her alcohol-free journey, which has inspired her to stay on track.

“What I’ve learned along the way is that family, whether it’s blood or found, do make you feel shy and embarrassed when you’re not doing the right things and the most proud when you are,” she said.
Chet shared his own experience and praised his parents for supporting him “through thick and thin.”
“I don’t take it for granted. I’m really, really grateful for both my parents. I’m at the age where I’m just really grateful for them,” he said. “I really cherish the time that I have spent with them.”

Chet — now half of the country duo Something Out West, who just released their debut single “Leaving Hollywood” — has long been candid about his past drug use, opening up about attending rehab and working on his sobriety, but also struggling with relapses.
In an August 2024 episode of The Surreal Life, he recalled hitting “rock bottom” after going on a “three-day coke binge.” The experience led to him going back to rehab and getting the help that he needed.
“I just knew, man, if I don’t change my life in a drastic way, either I’m not even going to be around or something bad, so bad, is going to happen that my life might as well be over,” he said at the time.
Chet recently reflected on his family’s legacy in Hollywood and his journey to acting, saying it was written in the stars.

But despite having acting in his genes, Chet told PEOPLE that his sobriety is what makes his career possible.
“It’s not difficult at all,” he said. “What’s difficult is when you’re trying to manage your life and you’re not sober, that’s what’s difficult. When you just commit and decide and you stick to it, it’s not even something that you negotiate with. It’s just a non-negotiable. And life becomes extremely easy.”
