Mother and Son Heading Home from Softball Tournament Are Killed in Suspected Wrong-Way DUI Crash

A wrong-way crash involving a suspected drunk driver has torn apart a Houston family.

The family was returning home from a weekend softball tournament in Dallas when Michael Anthony Arguijo, 46, allegedly drove his Ford F-150 truck the wrong way on the freeway, into oncoming traffic, according to a press release from the Houston Police Department.

Brittany Munive, 33, and her 9-year-old son DJ, were killed early in the morning on Monday, March 24, on a freeway in Houston when Arguijo allegedly hit their Mitsubishi head-on, according to police. Munive’s husband, Dario Munive, and their 10-year-old daughter Mila, are hospitalized and in critical condition.

The impact of the crash caused the family’s car to hit a third vehicle. According to police, Arguijo is charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. He remains in the hospital in critical condition.

It’s not immediately clear if he retained an attorney or entered a plea.

ABC13, citing court records, reports that in 2020, Arguijo was charged with a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, but that charge was dismissed after he completed a pre-trial intervention program.

Texas has the highest number of fatal wrong-way crashes out of any state, according to data analysis from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

A GoFundMe has been created for financial support as 10-year-old Mila and her father recover from the crash.

“Brittany lived for her children. She made sure they made it to every event and had everything they needed. DJ was your normal 9-year-old. He loved riding his dirt bike, baseball, and hassling his older sister. They will truly be missed,” Katherine Thomas, Brittany Munive’s sister, wrote in the GoFundMe description.
