Angelina Jolie lonely and struggling to live alone as vineyard legal battle with Brad Pitt looms

Angelina Jolie has admitted she struggles with loneliness, eight years since splitting from her third husband.

The 49-year-old filed for divorce from actor Brad Pitt, 60, in September 2016. Their acrimonious split, which saw them go to war over the custody of their six children, Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16, is regarded as one of the most bitter in showbiz history.

But despite winning the loyalty of their globe-trotting brood, Angelina admitted that she often feels “alone” – and it’s a trait that she shares with Maria Callas, the iconic opera star she portrays in a new biopic.

Speaking at a London hotel, she said: “I have my children I love but as an adult I’m often alone. I find myself identifying with the solitude and loneliness she has.

“I also haven’t quite figured out how to live life in a way where I’m on my own.

“Maybe a lot of artists feel that we’re in an open space as a person. We don’t quite settle. So it leaves us in a strange way sometimes.”

Last week, Angelina was nominated for a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Maria Callas in the film, which is written by Peaky Blinders showrunner Steven Knight.

And fans can expect to see some very raw moments of when the film hits the cinemas next year.

Ange previously told Variety magazine that working on the musical project was like “therapy” for her. She added that she had “lost her voice” after her mum Marcheline Bertrand died in 2017, and “someone hurt me”.

Maria Callas died in 1977 after struggling with drug addiction, scrutiny about her weight and a string of high-profile romantic failures. Callas was married to rich Italian businessman Giovanni Battista Meneghini when she was seduced away by the even wealthier Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. He later left her for Jackie Kennedy, after Maria had allegedly aborted his child.

In the new year, Angelina and Brad will face off in court over the ownership of their Chateau Miraval vineyard.

Pitt sued his former partner after she sold their half of Château Miraval for $67million (£51.6million) in October 2021. At the time, Pitt claimed the sale went against the pair’s initial verbal agreement. However, Jolie’s legal team claimed their client refused to let him buy her out of the business as she was against signing the NDA he requested as part of the deal.

Jolie has since formally requested that Pitt disclose the third-party communications he had following the2016 plane ride incident that led to the former couple’s divorce. Pitt’s lawyers, however, called the request “intrusive”. They also said it was a “sensationalist fishing expedition,” and pleaded with the judge to deny the request.
