Ciara Sullivan was still pregnant when she experienced “a severe medical emergency” that led to her twins being born via emergency cesarean section
A Massachusetts mom and her two newborn twins have died following a medical emergency, according to fire officials.
The Rutland Fire Department announced the death of firefighter Patrick Sullivan’s 30-year-old wife Ciara and their 11-day-old twins, James and Elizabeth in a Facebook post shared on Saturday, Dec. 28.
Ciara was still pregnant on Dec. 16 when she experienced “a severe medical emergency requiring immediate and significant medical intervention,” according to the description of an online fundraiser started for the Sullivan family.
Twins James and Elizabeth were put on ventilators after they were delivered prematurely via emergency cesarean section, the Shrewsbury Police Department said.
The trio was on life support before they “tragically all passed away in the hospital,” police added.
Ciara was serving as an Emergency Management Specialist for FEMA before her death and had “previously worked as a 911 dispatcher,” according to the Rutland Fire Department’s statement.
Fire officials described Ciara as “a dedicated public servant.”
“The Sullivan family would like to express their deepest, heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of love and generosity during this difficult time,” the department stated.
Patrick paid tribute to his late wife with a heartfelt Facebook post on Sunday, Dec. 29, describing Ciara as “the most hard working” and “most compassionate person i have ever met.”
“I can’t express how proud of her I am and how badass she really is,” Patrick wrote, calling Ciara “the single greatest, most loving, most compassionate person who has ever walked this horrible planet.”
He later added, “The ‘labels’ that matter to me are mother, wife, best friend, partner. Those are the things that are important.”
More than $136,000 has been raised through the online fundraiser to support the Sullivan family.
“Ciara, thank you for your dedicated service to the Shrewsbury Police Department,” the police department said in its statement, adding, “We are so sorry that this tragedy happened to you and your family. May you rest in peace with Elizabeth and James.”
