A 12-year-old boy is dead following a New Year’s Eve skiing accident at a New Hampshire mountain, authorities said.
According to a Conway Police Department news release provided to PEOPLE, the incident occurred on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at around 10:44 a.m. local time. In the statement, authorities said that the North Conway Fire/Rescue responded to Cranmore Mountain following a report of a boy who appeared to have hit a tree while skiing on the Bandit Trail.
At the time, the boy, whose name has not been disclosed by police, was reported to be unconscious and CPR was administered.
“When rescue personnel arrived on scene, the 12-year-old male was being treated by Cranmore Mountain Ski Patrol who had transported the boy to the base of the mountain,” the police department said. “He was then transported by Action Ambulance to Maine Health/Memorial Hospital in North Conway where he passed as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision.”
The Bandit Trail is described as an intermediate-level trail, according to police.
“On behalf of the Conway Police Department, and all the first responders who assisted, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family members of the 12-year-old boy,” said Conway Police Chief Christopher Mattei in the news release.
