Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis didn’t want a traditional Hollywood mansion. They spent years designing a home that reflected their values — simple, sustainable, and family-focused. The couple even built the entire structure around one unexpected feature from their previous home.

Perched on a six-acre hilltop, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ home was designed to resemble an old barn that had been repurposed into a residence. However, every detail was carefully planned to create a space that felt both rustic and modern.

The couple worked closely with an architect and interior designer for five years to bring their vision to life. Despite its scale, they made it clear that they weren’t looking for an extravagant estate. Their primary focus was creating a warm and functional space for their family.

A Barn-Style Home with a Modern Twist

The Los Angeles farmhouse is more than just a barn-inspired structure—it is a carefully planned retreat. From the beginning, they made it clear that they weren’t looking for a showpiece. “We wanted a home, not an estate,” said Kunis.

“We wanted the house to look like an old barn, something that had been here for decades, that was then converted into a house. But it also had to feel modern and relevant,” her husband elaborated.

The property includes a main house, a guesthouse that doubles as an entertainment barn, and a barbecue pavilion. The structures are arranged along a central axis to take full advantage of the property’s scenic views.

Designed by architect Howard Backen, the home combines traditional and contemporary elements. Reclaimed wood, board-form concrete, and large glass windows give it a rustic yet modern feel. The couple was deeply involved in every decision, from the size of the beams to the texture of the materials.

Although the house was built to resemble a barn, its interior avoids a purely farmhouse aesthetic. Instead, interior designer Vicky Charles incorporated refined touches giving a more contemporary feel.

Every piece of furniture and décor was carefully selected to create a stylish, functional, and comfortable space for their family.

One of the home’s most unexpected design choices came from a chandelier from their previous house. During a virtual interview, she explained that she had never liked the piece, calling it “obnoxious.” Instead of getting rid of it, she and Kutcher found a way to make it work by designing their new home around it.

The striking fixture now hangs in the center of the space, creating a bold contrast against the home’s otherwise understated design. “How do we make the chandelier less obnoxious? Let’s put a barn around it,” she recalled their thought process at the time.

Rather than following conventional design rules, they embraced the challenge of integrating old elements into their new space. However, their vision for their home extended far beyond aesthetics. Sustainability played a key role in the design, ensuring their property was not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible.

A Home Built for Their Growing Family

Kutcher and Kunis ensured their home was both energy-efficient and self-sufficient. The entire property runs on solar power, generating more energy than it consumes. Beyond renewable energy, the couple also focused on clean living and regenerative farming.

They dug a well to irrigate their land and grow their own crops, reducing their reliance on external resources. Sustainability was a key priority from the start, influencing both the materials used and the way the home interacts with the surrounding environment.

Their commitment to clean living extended beyond the structure itself, making the property as self-sufficient as possible. They also wanted to create a home that would grow with their family. When construction began, Kunis was pregnant with their first child, which influenced many of their design choices.

Rather than building a formal estate, they wanted a space where their children, Wyatt, 8, and Dimitri, 10, could play and explore freely. Every detail was planned with family life in mind, ensuring the home was both functional and welcoming.

Kutcher once spoke about how their home provides a sense of balance, saying, “If the world around you isn’t in order, it’s hard to get your brain in order. When we’re in our home, the world just makes sense.”

The couple’s dedication to family extends beyond their own household. Years before completing their dream home, Kunis took on another meaningful project—renovating her parents’ longtime condo.

Kunis’ Dedication to Family: Renovating Her Parents’ Condo

In 2016, Kunis took on a deeply personal project—renovating her parents’ condo. She convinced them to hand over the space to her, knowing they would never ask for an upgrade themselves.

The renovation focused on making the home more open and functional. The outdated kitchen was separated from the living area, making it difficult for the family to interact. To fix this, Kunis and her team removed walls to create an open-concept space, improving both flow and functionality.

When Kunis revealed the finished condo, her mother was overwhelmed with emotion, shedding tears of joy. Her father, who had worked tirelessly to provide for their family, beamed with pride. The project was featured on “My Houzz,” with Kutcher present to celebrate the transformation.

Kunis’ experience growing up shaped her appreciation for home and family. Having moved to the U.S. as a child with her immigrant parents, she understood the sacrifices they made to give her a better life. By renovating their home, she was able to give back in a meaningful way.

While Kunis has shared moments like this with the public, she and Kutcher have taken a different approach when it comes to their own family. They have made it a priority to keep their children’s lives as private as possible.

Keeping Their Family Life Private

Kutcher and Kunis rarely share details about their children, Wyatt and Dimitri. They have chosen not to post photos of them online, believing their kids should have a say in their public presence when they are older. While they occasionally take their children to public events, they generally keep their family life out of the spotlight.

Despite their privacy, the couple has spoken about their approach to parenting. Kutcher has described fatherhood as “the most important role” in his life and has made career decisions to prioritize time with his family. He even took a pay cut on a film project so production could be moved closer to home.

Outside of work, he stays involved in his children’s lives, once serving as a Cub Scouts den leader. While they maintain a low profile when it comes to their children, they have been open about instilling strong values in them. One of the most important lessons they have passed down is an appreciation for their cultural heritage.

Teaching Their Children About Their Heritage

The couple has made it a priority to educate their children about their background. Kunis, who was born in Ukraine, admitted that she hadn’t always emphasized her cultural roots at home. However, after recent global events, she and Kutcher had a change of heart.

“It seemed like overnight we both turned to our kids and were like, ‘You are half Ukrainian, half American,'” Kunis said. She explained that they wanted Wyatt and Dimitri to understand where they came from and to appreciate the diversity in their heritage.

“It’s beautiful, it’s amazing to have multiple cultures. We shouldn’t all be alike. We shouldn’t all think alike. That’s not the importance of community and growth,” she added.

Although Kunis and Kutcher are raising their children in the U.S., they want them to have a strong connection to their roots. Kunis has also passed her motherland language down to her children, ensuring they can communicate with their grandparents.

While they keep their children’s lives private, they are intentional about raising them with strong values, ensuring they stay connected to their heritage and understand the importance of hard work. Their home is a reflection of these principles—simple, sustainable, and built to last.
