Several middle school children have reportedly been hospitalized after eating edibles in Mississippi.

Six pupils at Bettie E Woolfolk Middle School were taken to the hospital on Tuesday, March 25, after a fellow student allegedly handed out edibles to their classmates, according to WLBT, WJTV and KKTV11 Alert.

Edibles are food products that contain marijuana, per MedicalNewsToday.

According to WLBT, the students were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Yazoo for treatment.

Two of the six children were reported to have been released from the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon. WLBT reported that the rest of the students are expected to be released soon.

PEOPLE has contacted Yazoo City Police Department and Bettie E Woolfolk Middle School for comment.

According to WLBT, Yazoo Police Chief Terry Gann said the investigation of the case is still ongoing and the student who gave out the edibles will likely be charged.

“We’re trying to get down to where this kid got them from,” he said. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”

WJTV also reported that the police chief said the child’s parents could face charges if they’re found to be involved in the incident.

Bettie E Woolfolk Middle School is part of the Mississippi Achievement School District.

“The Mississippi Achievement School District is aware of an incident that occurred at Woolfolk Middle School involving students and a suspected substance,” Superintendent Dr Earl Watkins said in a statement, according to the outlets. “The matter is currently under investigation, and we are working in coordination with local authorities to determine the facts.”

Watkins added, “As a district, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our students and have taken proactive steps to educate families about products that may appear harmless but pose serious risks. We will continue to communicate with our community and share updates as appropriate.”
