N.J. Woman Celebrating Her 24th Birthday, N.Y.C. Art Dealer Among 221 Killed in Dominican Nightclub Roof Collapse

A New Jersey woman celebrating her birthday, an art dealer and former COO are among the over 200 people who were killed in the Dominican Republic when the roof of a nightclub collapsed during a concert.

According to reports from NJ.com and the New York Post24-year-old Jennifer Contreras of Passaic, New Jersey was among those killed in the deadly Jet Set nightclub incident in Santo Domingo.

Contreras’ body was found by first responders underneath the rubble around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 night, her sister Luz Contreras told NJ.com. Luz told the outlet that her sister was celebrating her birthday at the club, and had traveled to the Dominican Republic to obtain a microblading certification to work at her sister’s nail salon.

“Everybody knew, everybody who knows us, knew, she was my best friend, my partner in crime, we always did everything together,” Contreras’ sister told the outlet. “She didn’t have any haters. With her, it was all love. Everyone loved her. I love her and I miss her so much.”

Additionally, the Post reports that Elvira Malkic and Hakim Boubazine, a New York City-based married couple, were also inside the Jet Set nightclub when its rooftop came down.

Malkic, a mom of three, co-owned the Elity Art Gallery on 5th Avenue in N.Y.C., per the outlet, and Boubazine served as the COO of Altice USA, a telecommunications company, until 2021.

The Elity Art Instagram page posted a tribute to Malkic, calling her “a true visionary who advanced undiscovered artistic talent” and “an angel sent to Earth.”

“We are heartbroken for the families of all those lost in this devastating event, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones of the Boubazine family,” Altice told PEOPLE in a statement.

Also among the dead was Rubby Pérez, the merengue singer who was performing at the night club when its roof collapsed. He was 69.

Enrique Paulino, Pérez’s manager, confirmed the news to PEOPLE after Rolling Stone and Listín Diario reported on his death. Pérez’s Instagram profile picture was also changed to black. His funeral was held on Thursday, April 10, per his Instagram account.

Also among the confirmed deceased are Tony Blanco, a former Major League Baseball player and father of current Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Tony Blanco Jr., as well as former MLB pitcher Octavio DotelNBC Boston also reported that Massachusetts restaurant owner Fray Luis Rosario died.

Nelsy Cruz, governor of northwestern Dominican Republic province of Montecristi and sister of former MLB star Nelson Cruz, died. According to Rolling Stone, a saxophonist performing on stage with Pérez is also dead.

The tragedy took place in the early hours of Tuesday at the Jet Set in Santo Domingo — and in a series of updates, local authorities confirmed that the death toll continued to grow throughout the day. Based on the latest information, at least 221 people have died as of Friday, April 11.

Emergency responders also announced that they were no longer searching for survivors amid the ruins of the club, according to reporting by The Guardian. They announced that they would shift their focus to recovering bodies after exhausting “all reasonable possibilities of finding more survivors.”
