- Jenna Bush Hager is opening up about the time she tried to trick her parents into thinking that she was kidnapped as a child
- Bush Hager is the daughter of 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush
- According to the Today with Jenna & Friends host, she was going to pretend that she was taken by “a man in a van with some puppies and some candy” after she was late getting home from school
Jenna Bush Hager had quite the vivid imagination as a child — so vivid, in fact, that sometimes it got her in trouble with the Secret Service!
On the Friday, April 11, episode of Today with Jenna & Friends, the host, 43, reflected on one of her most memorable childhood moments with guest and Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang, 34.
“In the first grade, I faked my own kidnapping, but my plan was derailed by Secret Service,” Bush Hager, who is the daughter of 43rd U.S. President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, joked.
After Yang asked what her fictional kidnapping plan was, Bush Hager revealed that she was going to pretend that she was taken by “a man in a van with some puppies and some candy.”
“Classic, classic ‘80s,” Yang quipped.
“I did the ‘80s story because I was caught, I’d stayed too late after school and I thought my mom was going to be mad at me. She was wondering where I was,” she said.

According to the Today host, the former first lady caught on to her plan pretty quickly, saying, “My mom knew I was lying but the Secret Service did not, so I had to go and apologize.”
Yang then asked if her prank took place “pre-Home Alone,” to which she replied, “This was around the same time as Home Alone, so I might have been inspired.”
“Our generation was centered around this fantasy of ‘get your parents out,'” Yang added.
“Oh, Barbara and I played Orphan, like, every day,” Bush Hager replied, referring to her twin sister, Barbara Bush.

Bush Hager has been candid about how she and Barbara would play when they lived in the White House as children. During a March episode of Today, Bush Hager opened up about some of their weirdest games, telling guest and NBC correspondent Willie Geist that “when we were little, we made our parents call us by our cat names.”
“What was your cat name?” Geist asked at the time.
“Rosebud,” Bush Hager revealed. “And my mom was Marmalade. My dad was Tummy Tuff and I can’t remember what Barbara was… oh, Stripes!”
“We would crawl to my parents,” she continued as the audience laughed. “I know, it’s odd. It’s become odder as time has gone by. But I am full cat. I like to lounge. I like to take names. I like to read.”
In February, the mom-of-three shared another hilarious moment from her family’s time in Texas, revealing that her high school boyfriend once called her father a hilarious nickname that left him red in the face.

While chatting with Geist, Bush Hager said, “I had a boyfriend in high school who called my dad ‘Big George’ once.”
Geist reacted in shock, asking, “He did? How long did that last?” to which the former first daughter replied, “He lasted a long time because he was handsome. But my dad — you know when you’re in those moments — it only works when you’re young because when you’re in those moments, you’re like, ‘Oh god, this is not good.’ But you can somewhat brush it over.”
